CAA regulation say any aircraft has to be able to clear the airfields surroundings( tall buildings/hill and such) and climb after an engine failure, not a problem for most aircraft. its all calculated meticulously before takeoff, based on known single engine performance. a 747 can loose 2 engines and still fly.
